Tamar and Tristan Arrive in Mexico |
After a gruelling 12 hour plane journey, only made possible by the presence of the Gameboy that Joe B gave us, we finally arrived in the polluted hell-hole that is Mexico City, and found it quite pleasant really.
We spent a lovely couple of nights at Rachel's apartment which was a haven of tranquility in the bustling metropolis. Our one and only trip out was to see the main square (zocalo) where we visited the Templo Major and the cathedral, and watched all the VW taxis go by.
The day after, we took the luxury UNO bus service, enjoying a couple of films and ice-cold bottles of coke. After six hours we finally arrived in Oaxaca - our home for the coming months. It was quite green as we are most definitely in the rainy season. As we drove in the taxi to our lovely hotel which Damon and Oddette had got us for three nights as a wedding present we noticed that there were lots of quiet streets perfect to stroll along looking for adventures - oh and craft shop after craft shop after craft shop!! And restaurants galore - HOORAY!!!
We spent the next couple of days exploring the city centre, and spent a lot of time in the zocalo chilling out, drinking beer and people-watching. We were lucky enough to have arrived in time for Independence Day which involved lots of people throwing confetti-filled eggs and snow-spray, as well as fireworks and lots of music. We even did a bit of dancing with a couple of hundred Mexicans.
Our other major activity was trying to find a house to rent. After scouring newspapers and noticeboards, we finally decided on the very first house that we visited. It's HUGE with a small but perfectly formed garden at the front, EIGHT rooms and a spectacular view from the roof. We'll put up more photos soon.
Another feauture of the house is wildlife: lots of spiders, cockroaches, ants and even a small scorpion (not Tamar's most favourite aspect of life in Oaxaca!) We also inherited a cat called Flasi that was left behind by the previous tenant, although she eats and sleeps with the landlady next door. The last tenant was American so we figure that "Flasi" is actually "Flossy" with a Yank accent and translated into Spanish! We have spent several days cleaning the house with no major mishaps apart from the oven exploding because we couldn't work out how to light it. Ooops.
So that's life so far!!! We hope that now we are more settled that it might get a bit more interesting - we will keep you posted!!!
